Creating space for change.
Creating space for change can sound like an unrealistic concept in our modern world yet change is constant.
You only need to look around you, at nature to see the signs that everything shifts and nothing stay the same, except perhaps for us. Going against the tide is a struggle, changing direction, even slightly can feel deeply uncomfortable, we resist feeling resistance! So instead we do things the same, deep down hoping one day we will have the motivation, or even just the first clue as to what to do to get us back on track, or off it, as the case may be.
If change is constant it’s no wonder we feel so stuck when we keep doing things the same old things
Time and space.
The two are different so already this is about seeing things differently. Space is about mental state, or mental headspace; allowing yourself the room in your mind to pause and process. Time, on the other hand, feels far more physical, you can see it displayed on your phone, watch or screen, our modern life is structured around it because time is a manmade concept. The problem we all have with time though comes down to the fact it is constantly moving and this is why we often feel we haven’t got enough of it and that it’s running out.
What if we tried pausing rather than pushing?
Yes, that project needs to get finished, the kids need to get to school and the dog needs to be walked but how about saying yes to creating space between those events even if it’s simply to acknowledge your experience?
Yes, I am dropping the P word; Presence.
Space gives us presence. If you could find a snippet of time for yourself between the doing to pause, what would you do differently?
Undoubtedly the space would invite a shift of perspective, a chance to be inspired by the idea of doing something differently because that’s all change needs to be, a tweak. Change is essential.
What does Change mean to you?
Change means revamping, refreshing, altering, varying, mixing things up, reworking, and regulating. The opposite of Change feels far less appealing to me, in fact, in my body right now the following words have caused my chest to tighten.
The opposite of Change is Keep; to retain, hold on to, remain, stay, control…
Yes, it can also mean stable and supportive but isn’t it ironic that nothing is more constant than change?
What if you changed your approach to your health, or simply changed the way you started your day?
Would it be hard? Yes.
Uncomfortable? Most probably.
What if one small change led to another until you sensed a shift in how you felt?
As the resistance softens it becomes easier to move forward.
So, my friend, where can you create space to pause? How can you invite a shift of perspective? What could you do to challenge yourself and do things (or one thing) differently?
Change is both uncomfortable and liberating, it’s also inevitable.
When you go against the tide it is a struggle until it stops feeling that way. We can get comfortable and complacent with ourselves and our well-being, resisting changing anything about our lives so all we ever experience is the change put on us by others.
This only layers onto our frustration.
When you keep doing the things that are frustrating you because you feel you can’t change them, it’s really because it’s harder to go against the tide.
Change will always happen to you but realise you get to choose change for yourself too. When you start to create space for change to become a thought, an idea, an action, soon change becomes a natural process you experience and things don’t feel (as) personal to you. Change happens around you as you move through it rather than feeling like it is directed at you because you are no longer choosing to stand still.
Prompts to pause and reflect on this week…
Where can I create space between the doing this week, at least once, to either do something for me or to simply pause for a while and process?
What am I not giving myself time to process?
What is feeling stuck, unmoving and frustrating to me right now, and what ONE thing can I do differently to help shift those emotions?
As we move through this week we have a big full moon eclipse happening. You’ll feel the effects from Monday through to Wednesday before the moon shifts into its releasing waning phase. There’s so much to learn and appreciate when we create space to appreciate what we are experiencing, nature being one of the greatest and most ancient teachers of how we can learn to do this ourselves.
Sending you big love and gratitude for your day, my friend,
Becki
