What is tapping and how can it support your wellbeing?
Imagine, if you could release the niggling negative thought that keeps looping over and over in your mind.
Imagine, if you could ease your anxiety and relieve yourself from the physical pain your anxiety is creating.
Imagine if you could catch a negative thought, focus on it with intention and a series of taps to release it.
That would be magic right?
That’s what I thought, and the fact this is all possible is why tapping is so powerful! This week on the blog I thought it would be useful to understand what tapping is and how it can be used to support your well-being.
EFT (which means Emotional Freedom Technique), is about freeing things up!
Freeing you from uncomfortable emotions and physical pain…
Easing stress or anxiety linked to a challenging experience…
Helping you find relief from your racing thoughts…
Freeing you from self-doubt!
Think about this…
All matter is made up of energy, including us which is why you feel a shift in your mood, behaviour and emotions when you experience something difficult or overwhelming.
E-MOTION is energy in motion and the cause of negative emotions is a disruption in your body’s energy system.
It is the process of tapping on specific touch points on your body that allows this release to happen. The tapping points are close to the meridians (similar to channels) which weave their way throughout your body.
By the way, the meridian system is taken from Chinese medicine and is similar to the Chakra system in yogic philosophy. The meridian system encourages the flow of energy known as Qi (chee, in Chinese medicine or, Prana in yogic philosophy) to move freely through the body.
By tapping on these points you can rebalance and clear your body’s energy system by focusing on the problem you want to move through.
So how do I use tapping as part of my self-care?
You may know, I love to journal and occasionally I find myself writing a stream of negative thoughts as I work through some big bad beliefs that are bogging me down. Let me give you an example…
One morning I woke up anxious, my heart was racing, my chest was tight and my tummy felt tender and bloated. I started to journal because I had so much on my mind and I needed to give my thoughts a place to go but I quickly started to feel really angry. As I watched myself write these negative things about myself I was getting more and more frustrated. When this happens I always go to my breathing techniques to rebalance but when my emotions become very intense I add in some tapping.
Weirdly, when you’re tapping the intention is to give your negative thoughts attention rather than try to ignore them and push them away. As you tap on your body you focus on the negative thoughts and feelings you’re having! Now, this is the magic part, the process of tapping and the points which you tap on, help to release the negative energy attached to your thoughts reducing the intensity of your emotions!
So basically, tapping helps you to pull up what is bothering you and turn its intensity down, or switch it off, on purpose!
Tapping has naturally slipped into my morning routine, although not every morning, I am not that disciplined! When I journal it’s natural that my problems come to the surface and breath work and tapping help me move through those difficult feelings often leaving me feeling energised and inspired!
Tapping has woven its way into my self-care routine, the yoga sessions I share in The Big Love Yoga Community, with my private clients, and in my workshops. If you’re curious to try tapping with me start by watching this video from last month’s ‘Breath + Mindset’ session and if you’d like to experience my journaling and self-care ritual for Releasing, why not join me for my online workshop next Wednesday evening from 7-9pm, Reflecting, Releasing and Riffing?
I hope you’ve found this useful,
Big love
