True or false? You are the foundation of your life…
I was in hospital recently in a bed next to a woman named Carole who had had life-changing surgery, completely unexpectedly may I add. Carole had been in for five long weeks in which time she’d had a very profound and intentional shift in her perspective about her life.
Carole was always doing things for everyone else and “taking on their sh*t!”
…Sound familiar?
“I’m done!” She said… “I’m going to look after myself and do what I want now. I’m going to be selfish!”
“You are the foundation of your life,” I said… It’s not selfish to tend to the foundation that everything else in your life relies on…. That being, your health!
I went on to share with her the story of the table a concept I’d first heard on an episode of the podcast The Diary of a CEO and recently re-read in his new book with the same title…
Visualise for a moment the most beautiful oak table, strong and designed to last a lifetime.
Imagine now dressing and arranging that table with plates, napkins, glassware, cutlery and flowers.
Each item you place on the table represents your family, your partner, your dog/cat/pet lizard, your career, etc…
And the table? Well, the table represents your health.
If heaven forbid something was removed from the table, say, the napkins (representing your job) you’d still have everything else on the table.
If life decided it was going to remove the flowers, representing your pet (I know, I know!), again you would still be left with everything else on the table.
However, if you removed the table - your health - everything else would fall to the floor. You would lose it all because without you there is no table, no need for napkins and glassware, plates, and flowers.
Your health is your most important priority.
Your health is the foundation of your life and tending to it daily is the key to living your best and most fulfilling life.
So how is your table?
Does it feel strong and stable, or a little wobbly with a piece of something wedged under one leg?
With so much going on in your life and so many other people and projects to think about, no wonder taking care of yourself drops to the bottom of the list of “I’ll do that after x,y,z…” or the book of, “It can wait till next week”.
I hope the story of the table invites a shift in your perspective and inspires one small change to happen today, entirely for you - your health.
Because I’m on a mission to help you create a lifestyle that supports and sustains your health and well-being, today I want to gift you my e-book.
