If you think wellbeing is all about happiness my friend, you’re wrong!

As someone who talks about wellbeing a lot I’ve started to notice a common misunderstanding around its meaning which I wanted to clear up, or rather bring up, to get you thinking…

In most conversations I’ve recently had there’s a common belief that wellbeing is simply a state of happiness, however…

Wellbeing; as defined by the Oxford Dictionary is; the state of being comfortable, healthy or happy.
Now, you can see from this definition it’s multi-layered and very subjective! I’m pretty confident no two people will have the same idea of what wellbeing means when they look at it in this way and apply it to all levels of their wellbeing, but I’m intrigued…

Let’s see how these layers look shall we?

Physical; this seems the most obvious place to start as it relates to your physical body, your environment or behaviour in relation to being comfortable, healthy or happy. So, what are you thinking?

Emotional or psychological; here I invite you to go deeper and think about how you think and feel about comfort, health and happiness as well as your experience day to day in terms of being comfortable, healthy and happy?

Social; how does comfort, health and happiness relate to how you interact with those around you, how do they impact your relationships?

Spiritual; deeper still and connected to your beliefs, values and how connected you are to your inner self, would you say you’re feeling healthy, happy or comfortable when you consider your spiritual wellbeing?

Intellectual; the most important layer for some; how do these aspects relate to your intellectual wellness and the expansion of your knowledge? Deep.

Economic; in relation to your basic needs, how do you feel in terms of being comfortable, healthy or happy, this is connected to your sense of security?

You see, it’s no simple thing wellbeing; it’s as multi-layered and complex as the person defining it and no person is the same.
When we understand happiness, comfort and health are subjective we can see there’s no one way to go about improving, supporting or maintaining our wellbeing.

Wellbeing is the state of being-well, whatever that means for you, in terms of happiness, comfort and health.

Weaving together the physical, emotional and spiritual layers of your wellbeing is a good place to start, these help to connect you to your inner world, to others, to the world around you, and will most definitely impact intellectual, social and economic wellbeing.

Although there’s no definitive end point; wellbeing is a state of being after all and is as changeable as the day we wake up to, by developing a better understanding of ourselves we can deepen our connection to outer and inner worlds and that awareness creates a connection between the multiple layers of our wellbeing.

This is where my work begins.

I teach about the body, the emotions and how the body physically responds to those emotions, good and bad. I share my transformational tools to help develop self-awareness and ways to self-support and self-motivate. Ultimately I help you build a personal toolkit of self-empowering practices to support your wellbeing.

How has this changed how you think about your wellbeing? We are far from simple creatures so I personally find comfort (no pun intended) in the all layers. If you feel like sharing your thoughts with me or the collective you can find me on the gram, in the FB community or add a comment below!

For now, as always take care, take a deep breath and I wish you all a great week my friends,
Becki

P.S… I’m hosting a FREE webinar; The Mindful Masterclass next Thursday 8th April, where I’ll be going deeper on this subject and I’d love you to join! You can register your spot here. x
